Burghausen is a town in Upper Bavaria on the Salzach, the river that forms the border with Austria here. It is known for its castle, which stretches for about a kilometre along a narrow ridge. It is often described as the longest castle complex in the world. On the map, the castle's outline is a long, thin strip between the river and a small lake.
The old town lies in a narrow space between the ridge and the Salzach, with its streets following the curve of the river. Below the castle's western side lies the Wöhrsee, a small lake popular for swimming. Beyond, a much larger modern town and a major chemical industry site spread out across the plateau.
A Burghausen map poster shows one of the most unusual town layouts in Bavaria. The river, the ridge and the lake are so close together that the whole historic core fits in a narrow strip. Across the water, the Austrian town of Ach adds a second bank to the picture.
