Cabudwaaq lies in the Galguduud region of central Somalia, close to the border with Ethiopia. The land around it is flat, semi-arid country used largely for grazing livestock, and on the map the town stands out clearly against that open ground. Its streets form a fairly compact pattern around a central area, and roads and tracks lead out across the plain toward neighbouring settlements.
Towns in this part of Somalia serve as trading and service centres for pastoral communities across a wide area, and Cabudwaaq has grown into one of the larger settlements in its region.
