Caçapava do Sul sits in the Serra do Sudeste of Rio Grande do Sul, in a region known for its unusual geology; the municipality promotes itself as the state's capital of geodiversity, and the sandstone formations of the Guaritas lie within its territory. The town itself occupies higher ground, with streets arranged in a largely regular grid.
History also shaped the plan. During the Ragamuffin War of the 1830s and 1840s, Caçapava served for a time as capital of the Riograndense Republic, and the eighteenth-century Forte Dom Pedro II, a Portuguese stone fortification, still stands on the edge of town as one of its best-known landmarks.
