Cadereyta Jiménez lies on the plains east of Monterrey in Nuevo León. Its historic centre, founded in colonial times, has a compact layout of blocks around a main square and church. Around that core, newer neighbourhoods and industrial zones have spread across flat land, connected by highways that run toward Monterrey and the Gulf coast.
The town is widely known for its large PEMEX refinery, one of the most important in Mexico. On a map the refinery appears as a sweeping area of geometric shapes, including tanks, service roads and pipelines, at a completely different scale from the streets of the old town.
A Cadereyta map poster sets those two faces of the town side by side: an old colonial grid, and an industrial landscape drawn in straight lines and circles, all on the open plain of northern Mexico.
