Canarana is a municipality in the interior of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil, within the semi-arid region known as the sertão. The town lies inland on the state's high plains, where the land is broad and open. On the map its urban area forms a compact, fairly regular grid of streets with clear edges on every side.
Like many towns of the Bahian interior, it grew outward from a central core, with residential blocks extending along the roads to neighbouring municipalities. The surrounding countryside, close to the farming region around Irecê, is mostly given over to agriculture. The rural roads leaving town divide it into long, straight field boundaries.
