Caotang lies in the mountains of eastern Chongqing, in the region of the upper Yangtze known for the Three Gorges. On a map the town is shaped almost entirely by relief: streets squeeze along the narrow valley floors, and buildings follow the slope where the land allows. There is little room for a regular grid, so the pattern that emerges is linear and branching.
Around the built-up area, the lines thin out into winding mountain roads that switch back as they climb, and small streams feed down toward larger waterways. It is the kind of place where terrain decides everything, and the street plan reads almost like a trace of the watercourses that carved these valleys.
