Carbondale lies in Southern Illinois, in the region often called Little Egypt, where the flat prairie of the state begins to give way to wooded hills. The town grew up along the railroad in the nineteenth century, and its downtown still follows a straightforward grid set out beside the tracks.
It is best known as the home of Southern Illinois University. The campus takes up a large area south of downtown, with a lake, wooded areas and curving paths that stand out clearly against the grid. For many people the town and the university are almost the same thing.
A Carbondale map poster shows the railroad cutting north to south through the middle, the grid of downtown streets, and the campus with its open spaces and water. Crab Orchard Lake lies to the east, and the Shawnee National Forest country begins not far to the south.
