Columbia sits in the middle of Missouri, roughly halfway between Kansas City and St. Louis, with Interstate 70 running along its northern side. Downtown, known locally as The District, keeps a compact grid of brick-lined blocks. Just south of it, the University of Missouri spreads across a large campus that dominates the centre of the map.
Columbia is often called a triple college town because it is home to the University of Missouri, Stephens College and Columbia College. Mizzou's Francis Quadrangle, with the free-standing stone columns of the original academic hall, is the city's best-known image. The university's journalism school is recognised as the first of its kind in the world.
Beyond the centre, the city grows outward along creeks and wooded valleys. Hinkson Creek winds through town, and the MKT Trail follows an old rail line toward the Missouri River bottoms to the south-west.
