Carrboro sits directly west of Chapel Hill in Orange County, North Carolina, and on the map there is no visible seam between the two towns. Carrboro grew up around a railroad terminus and a cotton mill at the turn of the twentieth century. Its compact downtown still sits close to the tracks, with Main and Weaver Streets forming its core.
The town takes its name from Julian Carr, the industrialist who owned the mill. Today the mill building holds shops and offices. Carrboro is known for its music venues, its farmers' market and a large community of University of North Carolina students, staff and faculty who live within walking or cycling distance of campus.
