Carson lies in the South Bay part of Los Angeles County, on the flat plain between central Los Angeles and the ports of Long Beach and San Pedro. Its map is a patchwork of residential grids, industrial land and large infrastructure. Several freeways cross it, including the 405 and the 110, and the 710 runs close to the east.
The city was incorporated in 1968. It is home to California State University, Dominguez Hills, whose campus sits on one of the few rises on this low plain. Next to it is the stadium where the LA Galaxy play. The Dominguez Channel crosses the city in a long, straight concrete course.
A Carson map poster shows the logic of a working suburb: neat housing tracts, big refinery and warehouse blocks, rail corridors toward the harbour and freeway interchanges sweeping between them. In black and white these very different pieces fit together into a surprisingly balanced composition.
