Carvin lies in the Pas-de-Calais department, on the flat plain between Lens and Lille. For more than a century it was part of the northern French coalfield, and the mining basin of Nord-Pas-de-Calais is now recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. On a map, the legacy of that era is visible in the shape of the town.
The historic centre has a compact, irregular street pattern around its church and main square. Around it, former mining settlements, known as cités, were built in regular rows of identical houses, forming neat grids that differ clearly from the older core.
Railway lines, main roads and the A1 motorway cross the area, and open farmland lies between Carvin and neighbouring towns. A Carvin map poster shows how an old market town and its planned mining districts came together on the plain.
