Casimiro de Abreu is a municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro, between the mountains of the Serra do Mar and the Atlantic coast. It is named after the nineteenth-century Romantic poet Casimiro de Abreu, who was born in Barra de São João, the municipality's small coastal district at the mouth of the São João River.
The main town sits inland, with a compact set of streets along main roads, surrounded by farmland and forested slopes. The coastal district is quite different on the map, a small settlement where the river meets the sea, with a beach, a river mouth and a narrow strip of streets along the water.
