Magé Map Poster
Magé lies at the far northern end of Guanabara Bay, across the water from Rio de Janeiro. Its southern edge is a low, irregular shoreline of mangroves and river mouths. From there the land rises gradually northwards to the forested slopes of the Serra dos Órgãos. Separate settlements are scattered along the roads between the bay and the hills.
The municipality has an important place in Brazilian transport history. The country's first railway, built by the Baron of Mauá in the 1850s, started from a pier in Magé's territory. Passengers from Rio crossed the bay by boat and continued by train towards the mountains. Traces of that route are part of local memory.

Towards the top, the streets thin out against the hills. In black and white, the coastline alone makes an arresting shape.
