Catarina lies in the interior of Ceará, in north-eastern Brazil, in the semi-arid sertão. From above, the town is a small, compact grid centred on its main square and church, with low houses on regular blocks. Around it the land opens into caatinga scrub, cattle pasture and a network of unpaved roads, with small reservoirs scattered across the countryside.
In the sertão, water shapes everything, and even on a map you can see how settlements, roads and fields relate to the few rivers and dams that hold water through the long dry season. Towns like Catarina serve as local centres for the surrounding farms and villages.
