Cava de' Tirreni lies in a green valley between the Lattari Mountains and the Picentini range, just inland from Salerno and the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast. On a map, the town stretches along the valley floor. Its central axis follows the natural passage between the coast and the plain of Naples, and smaller hamlets climb the slopes on both sides.
The historic centre grew along the Borgo Scacciaventi, a long main street lined with arcades on both sides. The porticoes form one of the most distinctive urban features in Campania, and from above the street appears as a continuous, slightly curving line with narrow buildings pressed against it. Away from the centre, the frazioni are scattered across the hillsides and linked by winding roads.
A Cava de' Tirreni map poster also shows the settlements up in the hills, including Corpo di Cava. It is home to the Abbey of the Santissima Trinità, a Benedictine monastery founded in the eleventh century whose archive is among the oldest in southern Italy.
