Cavaillon lies in the Vaucluse, on the plain just north of the Durance and at the foot of the Colline Saint-Jacques. This limestone hill rises abruptly above the rooftops, and a small chapel sits at its summit. From above, the old town appears as a tight, irregular core, ringed by boulevards that follow the line of its former defences.
The town is known across France for its melons, and the countryside around it still reflects that. Beyond the last streets the map breaks into a patchwork of fields, irrigation canals and farm tracks. The Roman arch near the foot of the hill recalls a much older settlement, when Cavaillon was a stop on routes across southern Gaul.

Wide boulevards encircle the historic centre along the path of the old walls. They draw a clear loop around narrower lanes and small squares.

To the south the river spreads across a wide, braided bed. It is bordered by fields and irrigation channels that give the edge of the print a finer texture.
