Changyŏn is a county town in South Hwanghae Province, in the southwest of North Korea. The province is one of the country's main farming regions, and the landscape around the town is largely flat to gently hilly, with rice fields and irrigation channels. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets surrounded by an ordered pattern of fields.
Detailed and reliable information about towns in North Korea is limited, and published maps vary in their coverage. What can be seen clearly is the overall form: a small urban centre, roads leading outward to neighbouring counties and the coast, and a countryside shaped by agriculture.
