Chełmża lies north of Toruń on the shore of Lake Chełmżyńskie, a long, slender body of water that dominates its map. The old town sits close to the water, with a market square and a regular grid of streets typical of medieval towns founded in this region. Newer districts spread away from the lake, while open fields surround the town on the remaining sides.
For centuries Chełmża was the seat of the bishops of Chełmno, and its Gothic co-cathedral of the Holy Trinity remains the town's most distinctive building, standing near the lakeshore.
