Chengde Map Poster
Chengde lies in a narrow valley in the mountains of northern Hebei, and its map follows the course of the Wulie River. The city stretches along the riverbanks, confined by steep hills on both sides. North of the centre, the Mountain Resort covers a huge area of lakes, forests and walled grounds, larger than the city's older core.
The Mountain Resort was built by the Qing emperors as a summer retreat, and together with the Eight Outer Temples on the surrounding hills it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the temples, Putuo Zongcheng, is modelled on the Potala Palace in Lhasa. A tall rock pillar, Qingchui Peak, stands on a ridge east of the city.
