Peking University traces its origins to the Imperial University of Peking, established in 1898, and is one of the most prominent universities in China. Its main campus lies in Haidian District in northwest Beijing, on grounds that once belonged to classical gardens and were later used by Yenching University. The imperial gardens of the Summer Palace and Yuanmingyuan lie a short distance away.
The map shows a campus quite unlike Beijing's straight ring roads and grid. In the northern part, Weiming Lake forms an irregular body of water with an island, surrounded by curving paths and small ponds. Further south, the layout becomes more regular, with courtyards, teaching buildings and sports fields arranged in rows.
