Cheshire lies in central Connecticut, between New Haven and Waterbury, in rolling country of low ridges, woods and small reservoirs. From above, it shows the typical New England pattern: a historic centre around a town green, main roads leading outward, and suburban streets curling into cul-de-sacs among the trees. Interstate 691 and Route 10 are the strongest lines across the town.
The town is known as the Bedding Plant Capital of Connecticut, a nod to its many nurseries and greenhouses. Cheshire Academy, founded in 1794, is one of the older boarding schools in the country. A long, straight path follows the route of the former Farmington Canal, now the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, and runs north to south through town.
