Chetput, also written Chetpet, is a town in Tiruvannamalai district in northern Tamil Nadu. On the map it forms a compact cluster of streets where several roads meet, surrounded by farmland. Beyond the built-up area, the landscape is divided into small fields, and the rounded outlines of irrigation tanks appear, as they do across much of rural Tamil Nadu.
The town serves as a local market and administrative centre for the villages around it. The region depends largely on agriculture. Paddy and other crops are grown on land watered by tanks and wells, a system of storing monsoon rain that has shaped the Tamil countryside for centuries.
