Chŏngju is a city in North P'yŏngan Province in the northwest of North Korea, on the lowland plain between the mountains and the Yellow Sea coast. From above, the town appears as a compact grid of streets surrounded by paddy fields, irrigation channels and low hills.
Its position is defined by transport: the main railway line from Pyongyang to Sinŭiju on the Chinese border passes through Chŏngju, and roads follow the same corridor. These long lines cross the map diagonally and give the town its main orientation, with residential blocks and public buildings arranged around them.
Beyond the edges of town, the pattern changes to the fine, repeating divisions of rice paddies and small villages, with rivers and streams draining toward the sea. A Chŏngju-si map poster captures this simple structure of rail, grid and field.
