Chorzów lies in the middle of the Upper Silesian conurbation, surrounded on all sides by neighbouring cities, so on a map its edges blend into Katowice, Świętochłowice and Ruda Śląska. Its streets form a dense network of blocks, shaped by the growth of mines and ironworks in the nineteenth century, when the town was known as Królewska Huta.
The largest single feature on the map is Silesian Park, a vast green space created after the Second World War on land affected by mining and industry. It is one of the largest urban parks in Europe and contains the Silesian Stadium, a zoo, a planetarium and an ethnographic open-air museum. The park appears as a large open area with curving paths and small ponds.
Rail lines and industrial sites cut through the city, and trams run along its main streets, part of one of the oldest tram networks in Poland.
