Dąbrowa Górnicza lies in the Zagłębie Dąbrowskie area of southern Poland, at the eastern end of the Silesian metropolitan area. Unlike a compact old town, its map is spread out, with districts separated by forest, rail yards, industrial land and water. The Czarna Przemsza river crosses the area, and the city borders its neighbours without a single obvious centre of gravity.
Coal mining and heavy industry shaped the city. Huta Katowice, a major steelworks, is located within the city limits, and its vast rectilinear site, with rail sidings running through it, shows up clearly from above. Wide roads and tram lines connect the districts to Sosnowiec, Będzin and Katowice.
The most striking features on a Dąbrowa Górnicza map poster are the Pogoria lakes.
