Cianjur lies in the uplands of West Java, on the route between Jakarta's southern hills and Bandung. From above, the town is a compact knot of streets on gently sloping ground, with the massif of Gede and Pangrango rising to the north. Beyond the built-up edge, the map quickly turns to fields, small villages and roads following the contours.
The name is known across Indonesia for rice. Cianjur's fragrant varieties are a regional point of pride, and the landscape around the town explains why: irrigated paddies fan out across the lowland, cut into narrow plots by channels and footpaths.
