Purwakarta sits in the rolling country between Jakarta and Bandung, and its map reflects that in-between position. The town centre is small and tightly drawn, with streets bending around a circular lake, Situ Buleud, that works as a natural hub. Around it, residential lanes fill the gaps between main roads, and fields and hills begin quickly at the edges.
Transport lines cross the town in clear strokes. The railway between Jakarta and Bandung runs through Purwakarta, and the Cipularang toll road passes nearby, drawing a long curve across the regency. To the southwest lies the Jatiluhur Reservoir, created by damming the Citarum River, whose irregular shoreline breaks into dozens of inlets that look almost like branching coral when drawn in black line.
