Cloppenburg is the district town of the Oldenburger Münsterland in western Lower Saxony. The landscape around it is almost completely flat. Fields, farm roads and small woods cover the countryside, and the town is a compact cluster of streets in the middle of it.
The small Soeste river winds past the town centre. Main roads lead out in several directions and form a rough star around the core. Cloppenburg is best known for its Museumsdorf. Opened in the 1930s, it is one of Germany's oldest open-air museums and has rebuilt historic farmhouses and barns from across the region.
