Cluj-Napoca lies in the valley of the Someșul Mic River in northwestern Romania, the largest city of Transylvania. Its name joins the medieval Cluj with Napoca, the Roman settlement that stood here before it. The city stretches along the valley from east to west, with hills rising on both sides and newer districts climbing their slopes.
At the centre, the medieval core forms a compact tangle of streets around Union Square and the tall Gothic Church of St. Michael. North of it, the river runs past Central Park, where a small lake sits among the trees, and Cetățuia Hill rises above the bank. To the west lies the Hoia forest, a large dark patch on any map.
Cluj is also a major university city, home to Babeș-Bolyai University, and students give the centre its everyday rhythm.
