Cornelius lies on the eastern shore of Lake Norman, north of Charlotte. From above, the town is shaped less by its streets than by the lake. The shoreline is ragged with coves, inlets and narrow peninsulas, and each one is lined with curving residential roads that end at the water. Few places of its size have this much shoreline.
Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina. It formed when Cowans Ford Dam was built on the Catawba River in the 1960s, and its flooded valleys give the map its character. On the poster the water becomes a broad pale field, and the old creek beds show up as branching arms that reach deep into the land.
Away from the shore, Interstate 77 runs north to south through the town, with shopping streets and older neighbourhoods grouped around it. A Cornelius map poster shows the contrast between the straight line of the highway and the looping cul-de-sacs by the lake. It is a pattern shared by many lakeside towns in the Piedmont.

The interstate cuts a straight north–south line through town. It is a firm counterpoint to the irregular lake edge and the winding roads that branch toward it.

Residential streets loop and dead-end at the water, drawing fine, fern-like shapes along each peninsula. These details read clearly at the larger print sizes.
