Cruz Alta lies on the Planalto, the high tableland in the north-west of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. From above, the city follows a clear grid. Straight streets and square blocks spread out from the centre, and main roads and a rail line cut through at angles. Beyond the edges, the landscape opens into large, geometric fields, one of the country's most productive grain regions.
The city is best known as the birthplace of Érico Veríssimo, one of Brazil's most celebrated novelists and the author of the trilogy O Tempo e o Vento. His childhood home is now a museum. Cruz Alta also has deep roots in the history of southern Brazil as a stop on old cattle routes, and today it is an agricultural centre for the surrounding plateau.
