Çumra lies on the Konya plain in central Anatolia, one of the flattest and most intensively farmed landscapes in Turkey. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded on all sides by fields that stretch to the horizon. Irrigation canals and farm roads cut across the land in long straight lines.
Agriculture shapes the town's economy, and sugar beet processing has long been part of local industry. The surrounding plain is carefully divided into rectangular plots, and on a map that division creates a strong geometric pattern around the looser weave of the town centre.
The district is also home to Çatalhöyük, one of the best-known Neolithic settlements in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a mound that shows how long people have farmed this plain. A Çumra map poster shows the modern town within that very old agricultural landscape.
