Dabat lies in the highlands of North Gondar, in Ethiopia's Amhara region, on the main road running north from Gondar towards the Simien Mountains. The town grew along this route. On a map its streets line up beside the highway, and side lanes branch off into residential areas before giving way to cultivated slopes.
The surrounding country is high, open and farmed, crossed by seasonal streams and footpaths between villages. Dabat also serves as a market and administrative centre for the surrounding rural district, so roads and tracks converge on the town from several directions.
