Damboa is the headquarters of a local government area in Borno State, in the far north-east of Nigeria. It lies south of Maiduguri on the wide savanna plain. From above, the town is a compact grouping of streets and compounds, held together by the roads that link it to neighbouring towns and markets.
The surrounding land is flat and open, with farmland and dry-season watercourses rather than hills or coastline. That lets the town's shape stand out clearly on the map. Its street pattern mixes straighter main roads with the tighter, irregular lanes of residential quarters, where compounds sit close to one another.
