Dar Chioukh is a town in Djelfa Province, on the high plateaus of central Algeria, where the Tell Atlas gives way to broad steppe. From above, the setting is spacious and dry. There are long views of open ground and seasonal streams marked by faint lines. The compact town has fairly regular streets laid out on relatively level land.
The town centre is dense, with tightly arranged blocks of houses and a handful of wider roads carrying traffic in and out. Beyond the last buildings the map quickly empties into steppe, crossed by roads towards Djelfa and neighbouring communes. This is pastoral country, long associated with sheep herding, and the landscape looks open and lightly marked.
