Dārāsuram lies just west of Kumbakonam in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, in the fertile Kaveri delta. Water shapes the map here. Rivers and irrigation channels branch across the landscape and divide it into paddy fields, and the town forms a compact cluster of streets among them that almost merges with Kumbakonam's outskirts.
At its heart is the Airavatesvara Temple, built by the Chola king Rajaraja II in the twelfth century. Together with the great temples at Thanjavur and Gangaikonda Cholapuram, it forms the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Great Living Chola Temples. On a map, the temple compound shows as a clear rectangular enclosure within the surrounding streets.
