Dashan is in southwestern Yunnan, in mountain country that runs south toward the borders with Myanmar and Laos. The land here is rarely flat. From above, the town sits along whatever level ground the valley offers, and its streets curve to follow slopes and watercourses instead of running in a grid.
This part of Yunnan is known for tea growing and for its many ethnic communities, and the hillsides around towns like Dashan are often shaped by cultivation. Detailed information on the town itself is scarce outside China, so the map is the most honest portrait available: a settlement fitted into the landscape.
