Longling County lies in western Yunnan, near the border with Myanmar. The terrain is rugged and mountainous, cut by deep river valleys. From above, the most visible structure comes from the roads, which follow valleys and contour lines in long, winding curves. The county town sits in a small basin where the land flattens enough to hold a compact grid.
The county has a place in twentieth-century history. The old Burma Road, the wartime supply route between Yunnan and Myanmar, passed through the area. In 1944 Mount Song in Longling was the scene of a major battle during the Second World War, and the site is now a memorial.
Mapped at poster scale, Longling reads as a network of mountain roads converging on a small urban centre, surrounded by scattered villages and terraced slopes.
