Tengyue is the central urban area of Tengchong, a county-level city in western Yunnan close to the border with Myanmar. The town sits in a high plateau basin. From above, its street grid is clear and fairly regular, bordered by farmland, streams and the low hills that rise around the valley floor.
The surrounding area is one of China's best-known volcanic landscapes, with a field of extinct volcanic cones to the north and hot springs, including the Rehai geothermal area, to the southwest. Near the town lies Heshun, a well-preserved old village of stone lanes and traditional houses that attracts many visitors.
Tengchong has long been a trading town on the routes towards Myanmar, known for its jade trade, and it was heavily fought over during the Second World War in 1944. A Tengyue map poster sets the town's compact grid against a highland landscape that feels quite unlike most of China.
