Deggendorf sits on the north bank of the Danube in Lower Bavaria, just upstream of where the Isar joins it. On a map the old town appears as an elongated core built around a broad central market street, with lanes branching off to either side and newer districts spreading along the river and up toward the hills.
To the north the ground rises into the Bavarian Forest, and the town is often described as a gateway to it. The contrast is visible from above: a flat river plain with bridges and embankments to the south, and roads winding into wooded slopes to the north. Motorways meet nearby, framing the town with long sweeping curves.
