Deoria stands in the far east of Uttar Pradesh, not far from the Bihar border, on the level alluvial land of the middle Ganges basin. It is the administrative seat of the district of the same name. From above it appears as a compact town in a wide expanse of cultivated fields and village clusters.
The railway line crossing the town is the clearest structural element on the map, and the station area is one of its busiest points. Roads lead out from the centre toward neighbouring towns such as Gorakhpur to the north-west. The older market streets form a tighter, irregular mesh than the newer colonies at the edges.
