Deshnoke lies in the Thar Desert about thirty kilometres south of Bikaner in Rajasthan, on the main road and railway toward Nagaur and Jodhpur. From above, the town is a compact knot of streets surrounded by pale, open ground, with long straight transport lines passing close by.
The town is known across India for the Karni Mata Temple, dedicated to a revered local sage and famous for the thousands of rats that live within it and are treated as sacred. Pilgrims arrive throughout the year, and the temple area forms the heart of the settlement.
