Dharapuram lies in Tiruppur district in western Tamil Nadu, on the Amaravathi River. The river is the main feature on its map. It curves along the town, and the built area spreads out from it in a dense network of narrow streets. Farther from the centre, blocks become looser and roads lead out across the plain toward surrounding villages.
The town is an old regional centre in the Kongu region, an area known for agriculture and textiles. Temples and market streets in the older part of town give the centre a close-grained pattern, while the main highways connect it with Tiruppur, Palani and other nearby towns.
