Dongcheng lies in the north-west of Hainan, China's tropical island province, in the gently rolling countryside of Danzhou. It is a rural town rather than a city district, and from above it appears as a compact cluster of streets and buildings around its main roads, surrounded by a wide mosaic of fields, orchards and plantation land.
This part of Hainan has long been associated with rubber and other tropical crops, and the landscape around towns like Dongcheng is divided into regular plots and plantation blocks. The coast of the Beibu Gulf is not far to the west, and small villages are scattered through the farmland between the main roads.
