Dzerzhinsk lies on the left bank of the Oka River, a short distance upstream from Nizhny Novgorod. From above, the city appears as a compact block of residential streets and wide Soviet-era avenues. Large industrial zones stretch alongside it, and pine forests, lakes and the river's floodplain surround both.
The settlement of Rastyapino was renamed Dzerzhinsk around 1930 and grew into one of the main centres of the Soviet chemical industry. That industrial past is still visible in the long rail sidings and extensive plant sites. The surrounding forests and small lakes also make it a place of walks and summer swimming for residents.
A Dzerzhinsk map poster shows the clear split between the planned residential core and the large rectilinear industrial areas beside it. The Oka curves along one edge, the lakes appear as scattered rounded shapes in the woods, and the long avenues give the centre a regular, open structure.
