Kovrov stands on the Klyazma River in Vladimir Oblast, east of Moscow. On the map, the river bends along the town's northern edge, with a wide floodplain of meadows and old channels on the far side. The town sits on the higher bank, and its streets run in fairly regular blocks away from the water.
Kovrov is closely associated with arms design and manufacturing. Vasily Degtyaryov, one of the Soviet Union's best-known small-arms designers, worked here, and the large plant that bears his name remains a major employer. The railway between Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod runs through town, and it helped shape its industrial growth.
