El Wak is a town in Mandera County, in the far north-east of Kenya, close to the border with Somalia. The landscape around it is dry and flat, and on a map the town appears as a loose cluster of streets and compounds, with tracks radiating outward into open land. Few features interrupt the surrounding space.
The town's layout reflects its role as a local centre for trade and services in a pastoral region. Roads connect it to other towns in the county and toward the border, and the pattern of streets is less regular than in planned cities, shaped by the needs of markets, homes and livestock routes.
