Eldorado dos Carajás is a municipality in southeastern Pará, in a region shaped by road building, cattle ranching and large-scale mining in the nearby Carajás mountains. The town grew along the PA-150 highway. That origin is clear on the map: a long main road forms the spine, and a grid of streets has been added on either side.
The town is widely known for the events of 17 April 1996. That day, military police killed nineteen landless rural workers who were blocking the highway during a protest march. The date is now observed internationally as a day of peasant struggle. In Brazil it remains a central reference in debates about land and agrarian reform.
