Ellwangen lies on the Jagst River in eastern Baden-Württemberg, in a valley framed by wooded hills. On a map, the river runs through the lower part of town, and the old centre gathers on its bank in a compact, irregular pattern of streets around the market square and the Romanesque basilica of St. Vitus.
The town grew around a Benedictine abbey founded in the eighth century and later became the seat of a prince-provost. Its skyline still reflects that. Schloss ob Ellwangen stands on a hill above the town, and on the opposite height sits the baroque pilgrimage church of Schönenberg. Together they frame the valley from two sides.
