Espinosa is in the far north of Minas Gerais, close to the state line with Bahia. The surrounding landscape is semi-arid sertão: open country with scrub, farmland and long dirt roads. The town itself stands out as a compact, deliberate shape in that openness, with streets laid out in blocks around a central area and a main road passing through.
Many towns in inland Brazil follow a similar plan, and Espinosa's map shows it clearly. The core is a regular grid with a church square, and the neighbourhoods at the edges become looser as they meet the fields. Beyond them, rural roads spread out towards farms and smaller settlements.
